California DUI Drivng School "1650 WAIVER"
Relief for People Convicted of a CA DUI from Completing DUI School -- if Living or Moving
Out of State.

Moving or living out of state and convicted of DUI in CA?
- A "1650 waiver" relieves you of completing DUI school in CA.
After the mandatory suspension time from the DUI is over, the CA DMV will relieve you of completing a DUI school in CA and release the hold on your driving privilege, if the 1650 Waiver is granted.
.
What do I have to do to get DMV to grant the 1650 Waiver?
- You have to wait out any mandatory suspension period due to the DUI and clear up any other holds on your driving privilege in CA.

What exactly does this mean?
- On a 1st Offense DUI the mandatory suspension period could be 6 to 10 months. On a second offense it would likely be 2 years.
- If there are any other reasons that you would otherwise not be eligible for a license, you must also clear those issues up. DMV can suspend a driver’s license for many reasons. For instance, you might be a Negligent Operator for having too many points on your record within a certain amount of time, you might be suspended for Owing Back Child Support or you may have Failed to Appear in a CA Court on some unrelated matter.

Are there any other things I need to know about the waiver?
- This waiver can only be used once in a lifetime.
- You must sign a statement under penalty of perjury and show proof of out of state residency.
- If you move back to CA within 3 years you must complete the DUI school before being issued a CA driver’s license.
- You will have to file an SR 22 insurance form with the CA DMV for three years, which covers any vehicles you operate in California. The CA DMV may be able to offer an alternative, if you wish to contact them at 916-657-6525.

Why should I care what CA DMV does since I don't live there?
- The CA DMV will put the offense in the National Registry which may cause your state to reject your application to get a license in your new or home state.
- If you do business or travel here for pleasure and want to be able to drive in CA, this will allow you to do so.
